One of the great things about the Internet is email - and it's also one of the worst. Literally millions of spam emails are sent each day. This article is to assist our web hosting clients in understanding what spam is, how to report it if you are being bombarded, and how to avoid sending it.

So, what is spam?

This is a tough question. Essentially, it's unsolicited junk mail. It's estimated that spam mail constitutes twenty two percent of all emails sent. It's not only annoying, it can be insulting, disgusting, predatory and it actually slows down the Internet due to the amount of processing required to transport it.

While most spam can be easily identified, if you're operating an online business and need to approach people that you have never communicated with before, it can become a very grey area. After all, any initial approach on a commercial basis could be considered spam by the more radical anti-spammers out there - so we need to approach this in a balanced way.

Sending an email to the webmaster of a site you've just visited to request some sort of partnership.

Sending one million emails to the webmasters of refrigeration sites you have never visited offering to sell them dead spiders.

Administrative Contact: The person authorized to communicate with the domain registrar/hosting service on issues relating to the domain name/web site.

Apache: A popular "brand" of Open Source Web server originally created from a set of patches written for another server operating system.

Auto Responder: Software that acknowledges receipt of an e-mail message by sending a predefined email to the sender. A sequential auto responder is one that acknowledges an email and then continues to send messages at intervals defined by the owner of the auto responder address.

Bandwidth: Usually a measurement to indicate the total amount of data processed by your site. This can include page views, downloads, email and uploads. Bandwidth is usually measured in megabytes or gigabytes.

Billing Contact: The person designated to receive invoices in relation to domain name, hosting services and responsible for ensuring payment of those invoices.

CGI BIN: A folder where common gateway interface (CGI) scripts are stored. As some scripts can create security risks, the CGI BIN is kept outside of the main documents (web page) folders. The CGI-BIN gives the webmaster greater control over access to the applications.

Cascading Style Sheets standards have been around for a long time, but many site owners are still a little scared by the term. It really isn't all that complex. What they basically are is a separate set of instructions, either in an external file, or embedded in the page coding that instructs a browser how to display certain elements - text, tables etc.

CSS is a very powerful tool, but added to that, using css can also be a huge time saver. Here's a scenario: you have a site of 40 pages and the main body text you use is 10pt. Arial. This would mean a lot of this kind of repetition your coding:

If you wished to change the font to Verdana, you would need to go through all 40 pages to change over to the new font. The proper use of CSS (using an external style sheet) would mean that you would only need to make the change in one file, and the site would update globally with the changes. Also, CSS makes your pages a lot lighter and faster to download as the same instructions don't need to be repeated throughout the coding.

Could I have more than one domain name ? Could they all point to the same web site ?

You can have as many domain names as you like. You can have each domain name point to a different site, or you can have multiple domain names point to the same web site. Our web hosting service supports all.

What is the difference between a subdomain, parked domain and add on domain ?

Subdomains: a subdomain points to a subfolder of the primary domain. For instance, test.yourdomain.name would point to a subfolder such as /test under the primary domain of yourdomain.name. Its content is separate from the main site so it can act like a separate site though usually it will have some relevance to the main site as you can see above.
Parked Domains: a parked domain is an additional domain that points to the main directory of your account. A parked domain will resolve to your primary domain name. Say your primary is domain1.com and you park domain2.com. In the address bar if you type domain2.com it will resolve to domain1.com but in the address bar you will see domain2.com. This is a parked domain.
Addon domains: an add on domain allows you to run a separate web site to your primary domain. When you create an add on domain it makes a folder in your public_html folder and you upload the site content into that folder. So, essentially you are running 2 separate sites, separate content, but one web hosting account.
